Declutter Diaries: Stuff – A BirthMay Post

Hello everyone! Welcome back to BirthMay 2022! Today’s post is going to be my experience decluttering my “stuff”.

In case you’re new, every May I blog every day and call it BirthMay! Why? Because it’s my birth month and I’m super extra.

My goal every BirthMay (and Blogmas) is to dedicate one day a week to a series that is meant for me to share my experiences and my knowledge on something in hopes that it helps someone else. For this BirthMay, I decided to dedicate Sundays to decluttering in this brand new series, Declutter Diaries! For the three middle Sundays in May, I’m going to share what I have learned about decluttering, my triumphs, my struggles, and thoughts overall.

Declutter Diaries: Stuff

I wasn’t sure what to name this one, but I settled on “stuff” because, well, I have TOO MUCH STUFF!

I loooooove having knick knacks and souvenirs and just stuff, but there comes a time when I have to admit that I have way too much stuff! I think this really hit home when I was straightening up my room and when I looked around I realized how many things were in the room and how little I used them. It was crazy to realize this and I felt a huge push to start to get rid of stuff.

It can be simultaneously easy and hard to get rid of stuff. Some things, like books and clothing, have a specific place they can go to – like a secondhand bookstore or thrift store. But stuff can be more difficult. For example, beauty items such as expired makeup. There’s not really an established way to get rid of that stuff safely and ethically, so the only option is to throw it out although I’ve heard that’s not a great option when it comes to being environmentally conscious. But, again, there’s not really another option out there! Or take my Google Home Mini. I bought it years ago when I used it for listening to podcasts and music but I don’t use it too much anymore. I can’t really get rid of it though, or at least I feel like I can’t, because it’s “old” at this point and everyone wants the latest tech rather than an old smart speaker. I don’t really burn candles anymore, but I have a ton and I don’t know what to do with them!

I could take some of the stuff like the candles and donate them. That would be pretty easy to do! But I always feel like the stuff could be thrown out because it’s not the right place for it to go to. Every so often I see TikToks on places where people will drop stuff off or pick things up for free. For example, I saw one where a woman runs a free art supply studio and people can donate art supplies if they want and grab stuff they want/need. Another one was a woman who lives in an apartment complex with a window ledge that everyone just accepts as a place where they can leave stuff they don’t want and grab stuff they see that they do want. I love that!

I do know there is a local FB group for getting rid of stuff so maybe I should take more advantage of that. I have also had some success in garage sales over the years. The downside of this is that it can be time intensive and I’d rather have a place I can donate the things to that wouldn’t be a thrift store. But, at the end of the day, the thrift store is probably the best place anyway, so I suppose I’ll prepare for another trip to drop things off soon!

So that’s my own thoughts on decluttering my stuff! This was the last of the declutter diaries for BirthMay, since next Sunday will be my Lively post. Please share your thoughts if you’ve decluttered anything recently, I’d love to hear it!

Thanks for reading!
