Hello everyone! Today, I wanted to share the new hobby I’m trying to get into. Poetry!

Now, this is a very surprising hobby for me. I’ll go more into depth as to why I want to get into poetry in a bit, but I never actually liked poetry, or I thought I didn’t. But as I thought about it, I realized I couldn’t be more wrong and I found myself craving a good poem to read. So here we are!
Also, as you can see, I’m doing Blogmas again this year! That means I’ll be blogging every day until Christmas. I’ve done Blogmas in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 so I am happy to be participating again in 2020.
Getting into Poetry
So as I was saying, when I was in high school and college, and even until late last month, I’ve maintained that I hate poetry. Like, hate hate. But recently I found myself listening to Taylor Swift’s folklore (my review linked there) and Evermore (review to come) albums, and realized that actually I was quite interested in the poetry of her song writing. She has said in the past she loves poetry and gets a lot of inspiration from it, so I figured I could too.
Also, I’ve dipped my toes into writing poetry! If you’ve been following along in my bullet journal videos, you’ll know that I write a little couplet at the start of every month. (Parts 1, 2, and 3 linked here.) Then, every month I picked a word based on my reflections on how that month had gone for me personally, and then I wrote a poem a few days ago with those words for 2020. (It will be in part 4, which will be up in a few days!) I’ve also started song writing, which is very similar to writing poetry as I kinda mentioned earlier.
So I can’t remember many poems that I was exposed to in school, it’s been so many years! I remember my junior year English class was full of poems and I think so was my senior year class. But I don’t remember what we read and I don’t have those materials anymore (I think, I should double check). What I decided to do instead is literally get on Google and search “great American poets” as a starting point. So far Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson popped up as top poet so I’ve started reading a bit of their poems. Dickinson’s poem Because I Could Not Stop For Death (I looked it up and my tiny bit of research said poetry titles shouldn’t be italicized but let me know if that’s wrong – I’m still learning!) is one that’s stayed with me for years and I specifically remember that one from junior year. Frost’s The Road Less Travelled too but I read his poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening was beautiful when I read it so I’m excited to find more cool poems from both of them.
I don’t want to just stick to the classics or the “famous” poems though. I do want to read more contemporary poems and maybe lesser known ones. So if everyone can give me their favorite poems as suggestions, that’d be great! If you want to give me one, two, ten, or more suggestions, I’d appreciate it! I know a lot of people will share their poems on their blogs so honestly if you write poetry, PLEASE let me know too!
So that’s the start of my new hobby reading poetry. As I mentioned, I need help finding poetry and resources so please leave me your tips and favorite poets/poems. I’d appreciate it!
Thanks for reading!
Pamela
