If We Were Having Coffee November 2020

Hello everyone! Let’s grab a cup of coffee and chat, shall we?

Today, I’ve made a cup of coffee from a brand that’s new to me. I have been enjoying Ethical Bean Fair Trade Organic Coffee in their medium roast. It’s pretty good! I drink it with oat milk as well. However, I think the Keurig is not doing so well lately because the coffee doesn’t seem as hot? I’ll have to do some research into that. But here’s what I’d tell you if we were having coffee! (Socially distant, of course.)

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, that the US Election Day is fast approaching! This Tuesday, November 3rd is our Election Day so if you are eligible to vote please remember to do so on Tuesday! The site IWillVote.com is a great resource to make a plan to vote. I mailed in my ballot early October, it was received by my local election board mid-October, and marked as “good” just a few days ago so it will be counted! But if you haven’t voted yet, please remember to do so!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, that the weather has turned in Northern Illinois. We finally had to turn on the heating system late in October and it actually snowed. SNOWED. Can you believe it? I can but that doesn’t make me any happier about it. While there’s a chance there will still be warm days, it seems that winter has started to make itself known pretty early this year.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, the job hunt is as frustrating as ever. I am trying my hardest to remain positive about it and I’m mostly succeeding but please let me rant about it for a little bit. Everything about job hunting is annoying! First, you have to create the cover letter and resume, only to be asked during the application process to manually enter all the information from the resume! Sure, I can copy and paste it but STILL! And then there’s nothing more frustrating than having what you think is an amazing cover letter and there’s no where to submit it. Literally, I had one application where if you tried to upload the cover letter it’d delete the resume and vice versa. There was no where else to upload additional documents! It was a waste of my time for sure. Then, you have to wait to be offered an interview. If you’re not selected then you’re lucky to get an email updating you that you weren’t but I think that the least they could do is offer an interview if you meet the qualifications and consider that applicant. After that, lots of my friends have experienced getting an offer that is ridiculously low and then be discouraged from negotiating. Then they’re stuck between trying to decide if they should take the job now that the company has revealed itself to be inflexible or risking it and declining in hopes of a better offer later on. There’s got to be a better way for this to work, and it’s so sad that companies are trying to take advantage of people just trying to advance their careers.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, that I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year! I’ve done it a few years, but not recently. I figured since I’m still unemployed I should write a book, and what better time to do that since NaNo is here! NaNo, if you’re unfamiliar, is a month long writing challenge where the goal is to write 50,000 words. There are other challenges you can do, but that’s the main one that NaNo was created for. I was struggling to pick what story I wanted to tell when I decided my sister would pick for me! So I numbered 7 ideas, asked her to pick a number, and then decided to go from there. I’ve spent the past week or so furiously planning out plot points, developing characters for the story, and even getting sidetracked by potential sequels. I’m excited to write creatively again, it’s been awhile!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, it’s my blog anniversary month! I forget what day it is exactly but it is towards the end of the month. This will mark the start of my sixth year blogging on here! How fun! So it’s my fifth blog anniversary, and I’m honestly so happy that I’ve been going this long. When I started my blog I knew I wasn’t going to quit easily, but I don’t think I thought I’d be blogging five years later. There’s a lot of thoughts that I have regarding this anniversary, so maybe I’ll save them for a full post!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, that my puppy niece is coming back for Thanksgiving! My sister’s sitting her roommate’s dog again so she asked if I could take my puppy niece (the two dogs don’t get along so they can’t be in the same room – it’d be too much for one person because of this). I obviously said yes and then said my puppy niece could stay forever if needed. My sister said forever wasn’t necessary but she was so happy at how happy I got! I miss little Arya sooooo much!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, that this weird semi-quarantine way of life is even weirder to me than full quarantine. While I still mostly treat it the same as full quarantine, so many people seem to take it the complete opposite. For example, I stay home unless I need to go out to get more groceries and such, with an occasional trip to stores like TJ Maxx that are just for fun. My mom, however, has decided her job is to shop and keeps going out to all the stores she can. I don’t go with her because she will literally just hang out and read stuff on her phone in the middle of a crowded store whereas I will go in for what I need, maybe do a quick lap around the store, and head out. Also, she is the type to walk into the store without wearing her mask and when employees ask her to put it on she just waves it in her hand until I have to sternly tell her “they mean put it ON YOUR FACE”. So frustrating! I see so many people acting like that too, so it’s not like it’s just one person. Ugh, I’d almost rather wish for a full quarantine again. But I do what I can!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, about my goal of “don’t be lazy”. It’s going great! I’m really applying this goal in many aspects of my life such as reading the book for my book club, doing laundry, job hunting, prepping for NaNo, and more! I am loving that this goal is keeping me busy as I am quite lazy and tend to not get as much done if I’m distracted by TikTok for too long or something.

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, how my other goal of “live with intention” is going. I think this one hasn’t been at the forefront of my mind lately. I do tend to focus on not being lazy so I guess the intention there is to not, in fact, be lazy. But I have to say that this goal was created with a vastly different outlook on the world and I intended the goal to make me leave my house… Clearly that was a miss for this year so I’ve since repurposed it but still!

If we were having coffee I’d tell you, a quick little update on my goal of “positivity”. As I mentioned earlier, I’m trying to stay positive while job hunting. The good news is that although I haven’t found a job, I am always able to find a job to apply for that I’m interested in! It’s super important to me that this next job be something I can be passionate about. I loved working in event planning, so I want something that will keep my interest day to day. Of course, there are many other important things I’m looking out for (such as pay and vacation time) but I’m positive something good will come up!

So, what would you tell me if we were having coffee? I’d love to know!

Thanks for reading!

Pamela

  1. Early voting is so good isn’t it?! I agree about semi-quarantine and full quarantine, I feel like it’s so easy to blur the lines and find loopholes compared to when it’s a full on lockdown and people try to bend the rules. Hope November is a good month for you and the job hunt proves successful soon 😊 happy blogging anniversary too!

    • Yes! I’ve done early voting for years, but in person, so early voting but via mail is also cool! And yes, it’s so frustrating with the semi-quarantine thing we have going on. Like, I honestly don’t know what the rules are anymore but I’m still pretending it’s full quarantine because I’ve gone this long might as well keep it going as it’s working. But I see so many social media posts of people hanging out at parties and I’m just confused why they think that’s okay. The only thing I can think of is that the semi-quarantine is giving a false sense of security and so it’s hard for people to know where to draw the line, especially if they don’t want to draw it in the first place. But ah well, hopefully everyone stays healthy regardless of their choices. And thank you! I have a good feeling about this month! 🙂
