Hello everyone! Welcome to Blogmas Day 20! Today I wanted to go over all the musicals I saw in 2019. (And one concert!)

I actually only saw four musicals this year, one ballet, and went to one concert, which really isn’t a lot for me! I didn’t have a lot of musicals in general that I was interested in this year and plus I didn’t have a season subscription either, so I only saw ones I really, really wanted to see. On one hand, I save a ton of money on tickets but on the other, I miss a lot of potentially awesome ones. Hopefully I see more in 2020. Here’s the ones I did see in 2019.
Anastasia

I saw Anastasia at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago. It was an absolutely amazing show! The story loosely follows the popular children’s animated film but I really enjoyed the stage version a lot more actually. I loved the music and the changes they made, plus it was just a great story in general!
Sweetener World Tour

This isn’t a musical but I did go see Ariana Grande’s Sweetener World Tour concert at the United Center in Chicago this year so I thought I’d add it in. I loved seeing this concert and really enjoyed Ariana’s performance. The venue was really cool and easy to get to, the music was amazing, and I am so glad I went!
The Phantom of the Opera

The next musical I saw was on Broadway! My first Broadway show! We chose to see The Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre because one person in the group hadn’t ever seen the full stage version and the rest of us just really wanted to see it again. While a part of me wishes I’d seen something new like Hadestown or Cursed Child, this musical was worth seeing on Broadway. It was just an amazing experience and I’m so happy we went!
Be More Chill

The second musical I saw on Broadway was the final performance of Be More Chill before they closed. (Reviewed in the same post as Phantom that was linked above.) We saw this one at the Lyceum Theatre and it was a great show to see. I didn’t know anything about it and still very much enjoyed the performance. Since it was the final show there was a lot of emotions and even a special performance at the end too. I really loved seeing this show and I’m glad we made the trip for it.
Something Rotten

The final musical (but not the last theatre production) I saw in 2019 was Something Rotten. I’d seen it before in Chicago but this time I saw it at a regional theatre, the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. I love this theatre and musical so I knew it’d be a great experience. It was so much fun and I really enjoyed seeing it here. Since it’s a funnier one I do wish I’d gone to an earlier show rather than an evening one as towards the end I was fading fast but it was still well worth seeing no matter what time of day!
The Nutcracker

The final performance I squeezed into 2019 was The Nutcracker. I really enjoyed watching the ballet, which was put on by a local dance school and showcased their ballet students. It was really a great performance and the young dancers were amazing! It really helped put me in the holiday spirit.
So those are the musicals I saw in 2019 – and one concert! It wasn’t the most I’ve ever seen in a year but I’m glad they were such great quality shows that I saw and well worth the time and money. What was your favorite musical or concert you attended? I’d love to know!
Thanks for reading!

I think Anastasia was my favorite musical I saw this year, too! Can’t wait to see which ones you decide to see in 2020, if any. 😊
