Hello everyone! Today I’m reflecting on my goal to “Get It Done”!

This is my third annual BirthMay! What is BirthMay, you ask? Well I blog every day in May because it’s my birth month! I started BirthMay in 2017 and did it again in 2018 so I knew I had to do it again this year.
So every year for my birthday I pick a goal to work on. It’s sort of like a New Year’s Resolution but better because it’s for my birthday! For this year, my 27th year, my goal has been Get It Done. If you want to learn more on why I picked it, go ahead and click that link to get to the post from last year introducing it! I’ve done mini updates through the year but here’s what I’ve learned and how I’ve put the goal into practice.
I’ve gone back and read that post from last year and I really feel like I did pretty good at working on this goal! I recently did a quiz online telling me what kind of thinker I am and it said I was an “ideas” person. I love to come up with ideas and then the follow through kind of falls off. I completely agree with that, which is why I wanted to work on this goal. I am amazing at coming up with an idea and I’ll put my all into it for a few days. But after that? Well, I’m not so great at it. There’s always room for improvement after all!
Overall I have noticed that I’m better at sitting down, doing the work, and pushing away distractions. How have I achieved this? Honestly, it’s been a bit of a lot of things. Here’s some top ones:
- Ignoring the distractions. I’ll still put on a YouTube video for background noise for example, but then I’ll completely ignore it! It’s great for getting work done, not so great for when I realize I have to rewatch it! To combat that issue I usually put on some ASMR for background.
- Saying no to things. I’ve really had to say no to so many things. It’s been really sad when I have to skip out on a musical or tell my dad I can’t help him with work over the weekend to get school stuff done, but it’s really helped a lot more than you’d think. For me, I really noticed that having “more” time to work on something really helps me relax and focus, but if I’m trying to cram in an assignment then it just stresses me out and my brain is just thinking “I have to get this done, I have to get this done” rather than, well, actually getting it done. That’s not to say I think deadlines are a bad thing, it’s just that I’d rather clear my schedule early to do the work I have to do and get it done rather than try to rush it.
- Accept the distraction for a moment. When I do get distracted I acknowledge what it is that distracted me so I can forget about it more quickly. Does that make sense? Let’s say that I was sitting here writing this post and all of a sudden I am struck with the idea that I want to go to the zoo. Instead of trying to force that idea out of my head I’d grab my phone, open up a new Chrome tab, and then look up the Lincoln Park Zoo. Then I might look up the hours or prices before locking my phone and putting it away again. Then I know I don’t have to remember it and keep it in my mind, because it’s still there for when I’m ready to come back to it.
I have seen plenty of benefits. I find that it’s just easier to sit down and get to work. Before I would sit down and waste time but now I can dive right into planning my work for a few minutes and then moving right into doing it. Having a game plan definitely helps me stay on track too so that is really beneficial to do right away. Everything gets done faster and easier and it’s so useful!
I’m really going to miss this goal. That’s not to say I won’t continue to work on it, because there’s always room for improvement! (I really have to stop saying that…) I’m really glad I took this year to get a good head start on this.
And that’s my reflection on my Year 27 Goal: Get It Done! I can’t wait to share my Year 28 Goal next week. It’s a good one too!
Thanks for reading!

That quiz about what kind of thinker you are sounds interesting, do you know the link to where you found it? Well done too by the way! 🙂

I don’t have the exact link that I can find anymore but if you google “what kind of thinker are you quiz” you get a bunch that are very similar! And thank you! 🙂

I like that you say there’s always room for improvement! Very true, but never forget the progress you’ve made 😊

Thanks for sharing these tips to avoid distractions!! They are so good. Whenever I feel distracted I have to write it down so even if I can’t indulge in the distraction right that moment I find peace in knowing I can give it attention later!

Yes! That’s actually so much better because my method means I have 80+ tabs open on my poor little phone haha!
