My Year 27 Goal: Get It Done! #BirthMay Day 19

Hi everyone! Okay, so today I’m going to talk about my goal for this year! So if you don’t know, every year I do something similar to a New Year’s Resolution for my birthday. Essentially I pick a goal and try to focus on it for the year.

Last year the goal was to Speak Up. This year the goal is to Get It Done!

The goal came from my inherent laziness really. Sometimes I’ll have all the tools to get something finished and then I feel putting it off until later. I really want to get away from that in the upcoming year so I can get more done and get it done more quickly.

For example, I nearly decided not to do this post because I wanted to be lazy and do something that I deemed “easier” but ultimately made myself follow through with my schedule. However, I then started watching Mr. Kate videos on YouTube and therefore this post is taking forever to write.

So I don’t have a problem doing things but I do have a problem getting it done quickly and I do tend to put it off for a bit before finally sitting down to do stuff.

Or I’ll prioritize things that don’t need to be. For example, there’s no reason I should be looking up what is in the summer FabFitFun box or looking up graduation cap decoration inspiration on Pinterest since graduation is an entire year away yet I’m still doing both of those things rather than focusing on writing this post. (But I’m really excited because I wasn’t allowed to decorate either my high school cap or my undergrad cap.) Yet, I’ve done both of those things while writing and it’s frustrating to a degree.

I suppose a lot of this goal will be based on discipline and focus. And I could do it the easy way where I turn off wifi on my laptop while working and not listen to anything but I don’t necessarily want to rely on that. I want to make sure that if I need to do something that I’m able to ignore any distractions and get to work so I will try to practice that. Plus sometimes it isn’t that easy as I’ll need to be able to still access the internet for research or something when doing homework or writing my book (which I plan to start outlining in these few weeks in between classes).

So this is my goal! I want to be able to sit down and get it done when I need to. I’ll be practicing this as I read my book before my next class (yup, we already have homework), as I continue BirthMay, as I continue to work on my book idea, and, of course, at work and as I keep up with my studies.

So let me know if you have any tips for staying focused and getting your tasks done quickly and right away!

Also, don’t forget to leave me your Q’s so I can give you my A’s! I was planning to do a mostly MBA related Q&A but I haven’t gotten too many school related Q’s, so I’m taking them all!

Thanks for reading!

  1. I like to whine & complain about doing something (usually internally) before getting to work. But once I get going I’m solid, it’s just getting started. What is with the not being allowed to decorate caps?! We paid good money for those! Glad you finally get to, super jealous.

    • Hahaha I get that! I’m soooo good at procrastinating and whining. Oh and so for high school we might have been allowed to but I don’t remember for sure. I just don’t remember anyone doing it so I’m thinking we weren’t! And then for undergrad we were just renting them so I think they didn’t want them damaged and plus the president of the college didn’t like it because he didn’t think it looked nice. One girl did it anyway and the cap looked like a hot mess so I get it but I found a ton of good ideas on Pinterest and now I can’t wait for next year!!!
