New Year’s Resolutions? – Blogmas Day 22

Hi everyone! So as 2016 comes to a close (finally!) I find myself facing the same dilemma I have every year. Should I make some New Year’s Resolutions? Normally I don’t.

It kind of seems silly to me to do so. After all, it’s so famously known that New Year’s Resolutions don’t stick. Plus all the usual resolutions, such as working out, aren’t really things that I want to incorporate in my life to begin with. (I know, I should work out but I just don’t want to!)

I suppose I do see the purpose in them. After all, how many times have we said “I’m going to start [goal] on Monday!” and suddenly that date (if you actually follow through on it) puts a real start time on this new goal. However those commitments usually tend to fall through within the first two months of the new year. The time frame just seems so long! So from what I hear about them, resolutions don’t work.

Yet, I almost do the same thing, except in May for my birthday. When I turned 24 I was suffering from daily panic attacks to the point that I actively avoided leaving my house. I also had a job I hated, a “best friend” that was such a terrible person, and an overall feeling that I didn’t like the life I was living. So I made a goal for myself. I really wish I could remember exactly how I phrased it but I made the goal to stop worrying and focus on making the changes I needed to make to live without the anxiety plaguing me.

And it worked! I got a new job that I really love, sent that horrid person packing, and I’m so happy now. So when my 25th birthday came up, I wanted to make a new goal.

My goal became to do more of what made me happy. I signed up for horseback riding lessons (something I’d always wanted to do), discovered a great new love for musical theatre and started going to as many musicals as I could, read a ton of books, etc. And it’s been working!

So I guess to finally answer the question I posed at the beginning of this post, no, I will not be making New Year’s Resolutions. But I will be looking forward to making my own set of goals for May when I turn 26!

Actually I might need to make one after all… I need to come to terms with the fact that I’m turning 26!

So let me know, do you make New Year’s Resolutions? And if so, do you keep them? If you want to share your 2017 resolutions, leave them below!

Thanks for reading!
