September Wrap Up and October TBR!

Hello everyone! This month will be a very short wrap up and quite a long TBR with a little bit of a life update as well. Here we go!

September Wrap Up

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

3 stars

I wish I could say I liked Scarlet as much as Cinder but I really didn’t. I gave this book three stars on Goodreads. It wasn’t as fun or as exciting as the previous book and the new characters weren’t much to be excited about. Honestly, I wanted to know more about the previous characters more than Scarlet after realizing that I just wasn’t going to like her character or story line so much. I did like the tie-in and how Cinder and Scarlet’s lives came together, so that was very nice and I really liked Cinder’s and Throne’s story along with Iko’s coming to terms with her new exterior. I’m still going to pick up the rest of the series at some point but it’s not my favorite after this installment.

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess

4 stars

This book was my vacation read while in Mexico and I already wrote a review here, so I won’t go on about this too much. Overall I liked ASBAB, especially once things got going. There are a ton of standard tropes in the story but the author was very good about turning around and making them something you weren’t expecting. I’m looking forward to the sequel.

That’s my whole wrap up! I know, it’s very odd that I only finished two books. I will likely finish another two in the next few days, but I don’t want to include them in my September wrap up, just in case. The two books are Divergent by Veronica Roth and Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas. So I have almost met my “minimum of four books a month” goal! If I read them by the end of the month I’ll add a note at the end of this paragraph and include them in my October wrap up with a special note.

More on why I only read two books in a bit.

October TBR

So I did read two books from my September TBR (assuming I finished Divergent).

  • Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow (did not read AGAIN)
  • La Sombra del Viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (did not read any more but I need to finish this one at some point x3)
  • Loving and Leaving Washington by John Yochelson (brought this book home to read as my vacation book but changed at last minute, must finish!)
  • Julia Vanishes by Catherine Egan (from my August and September TBR but did not read)
  • The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth (Assuming I finished book 1, I need to reread 2 and read 3)
  • Cress by Marissa Meyer
  • Ms. Marvel Vol 3 by G. Willow Wilson
  • Salt to the Sea by Ruta Septys
  • Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
  • Red Queen and Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard
  • The 5th Wave by RIck Yancey

Although it might take me a while to get to some of these I do want to read them in the next few months!

Life Update

So, now for the reason why I didn’t read that much this month! Honestly it’s been a combination of a few things.

One, I’ve been in a bit of a book slump, which is why I didn’t really read ASBAB while on vacation and waited until I got home to finish it.

Two, I think I was just so happy to have had my own adventure, after my first vacation in years and my first trip to Mexico in ten years, that I wanted to just be alone with that time in my mind for a little longer.

Three, I started studying for the GMAT! I want to go to grad school for my MBA and my ideal program is at a top tier school. For that program I need to get an amazing score so I’ve been reading a GMAT math fundamentals book as I haven’t taken a math class in at least 5 years. I don’t use algebra at my job so going back to revisit it has been a daunting idea but I have to do it to score well. I also got a huge GMAT study book and have an LSAT study book that I bought when I wanted to take the LSAT about two years ago. Since I don’t want to go to law school anymore I know it won’t be totally accurate but I think studying it should help me with the verbal portion of the GMAT at least.

I do expect to have smaller wrap ups in the future months because of my studying but to make up for it I want to do more book reviews.

Also I do plan to still make my four books per month goal as I will likely stop going to work with my dad soon due to the weather so I’ll have Sundays free for studying and I can go back to reading before bed instead of studying during the week. I still plan to do three blog posts a week so have no fear!

Otherwise I plan to try to get as much studying as possible for the GMAT before February/March so I can take the exam but we’ll see how it goes. Wish me luck! (And give me tips if you have any!)

And that’s that! I know, it’s a tiny wrap up, and in this instance it does not work in my favor that I post my books before the actual month is over but oh well. Lets keep our fingers crossed for a longer wrap up next month!

Thanks for reading!
